About the event

Films For Action: "The Line We Crossed"

Through the experiences of those who stood in defiance of non-action by the government to tackle the climate emergency, the film traces the quiet unravelling of our protest rights. It challenges audiences to question what makes dissent effective and where the line of acceptability is.

The right to nonviolent protest is a fundamental pillar of democracy and enshrined in many laws to which the UK government are signatories. Yet, as resistance grows, new laws restrict protest rights. For two years the film makers documented how the right to protest in the UK is under threat and how environmental defenders, in particular, are being targeted. We have witnessed first-hand how they are being silenced in court, criminalised and are receiving disproportionate punishments for nonviolent protest.

The evening will include a panel discussion with panel members including director Liz Smith and two leading activists of 'Defend our Juries'. There will be a bar and snacks, Palestinian food and FairTrade items to buy throughout the evening.

Visit us at St Paul's Church, Stoke Newington on 20th July, for an enjoyable afternoon, chatting and exploring innovative and fun ways of living more sustainably with some of our many local and environmentally friendly groups.
Join workshops on the life of your clothes, accessible traffic free areas, creative arts and learn how and why the Climate Fresk 'game' is gaining in popularity.
Tour the grounds of St Paul's and discover what makes it an Eco-church.
Drinks and some homemade snacks will be available for your afternoon tea and there will be a chance to taste the new innovative Hackney crisps.
We promise you an informative but fun and friendly afternoon - chat to us and your fellow Hackney residents and visitors before you return home feeling inspired and optimistic about the future of Hackney we can create together.

Lord Alf Dobs is a bit of a legend... Born in Prague 1932 in what was then Czechoslovakia, Dubs was one of 669 Czech-resident, mainly Jewish, children saved by British citizens from the Nazis on the Kindertransport (Dubs's father was Jewish). His father had fled to England the day the Nazis arrived in Czechoslovakia. Dubs was a child refugee of word war 2.
Since then he has ran for election and served this country, from 1983-87 as an elected seat for Battersea. From 1988 to 1995, he was director of the Refugee Council.
The Dubs Amendment:
In 2016, Lord Dubs sponsored an amendment to the ‘Immigration Act 2016’ to offer unaccompanied refugee children safe passage to Britain amidst the European refugee crisis. Originally rejected by the House of Commons, the amendment was accepted by the government following a second vote in favour by the Lords - however in February 2017, the Home Office abandoned the scheme after accepting only 350 of the planned 3,000 child refugees!! The UK government has only allowed 20 unaccompanied child refugees in two years since the ‘Home Office’s Vulnrable children’s Resettlement Scheme (VCRS) was agreed in 2016! This scheme was to allow 3000 vulnerable refugee children from conflict zones not 20 into the UK!!! And ‘incredibly low’ numbers of children under the ‘Dubs Amendment’, which allowed unaccompanied child refugees from Europe into the UK.
According to the UN there are approx over 12.4 million refugees under the age of 18 around the world currently seeking refuge.

The refugee crisis is an unresolved problem effecting the most vulnerable. 25 million refugees around the world continue to struggle, nearly half of them are under the age of 18!! Calais Children is a documentary film made by Hackney film maker Sue Clayton, that tells a story of what happened to 2000 lone children based in the Calais Jungle after it was set on fire by the French authority’s in 2016.
