Sustainable Hackney

We exist to protect and enhance the environment, create a sustainable community and contribute to social, economic and environmental justice locally and globally.

Hackney has always been a pioneer for change. Our sustainability work started in 1989 with the Hackney Environment Network and was later joined by the Eco-Active Yahoo Group. The current group was formed by the founding organisations, initially under the name of Hackney Wildlife and Environment Forum, and then Sustainable Hackney. We will continue to evolve to best meet the needs of our diverse communities and push for a better future for everyone.

OUR MISSION

Sustainable Hackney's mission is to support local environmental organisations, co-ordinate activities and bring far greater urgency to addressing climate change and protecting our local environment.

We are dedicated to fostering a sustainable and eco-friendly community. We are committed to promoting environmental awareness, sustainable practices, and collaborative efforts to address climate change. Our history is rooted in grassroots initiatives, and we continue to advocate for a greener future through community engagement and education.

OUR OBJECTIVES

To bring together, support and co-ordinate the activities of people and organisations in the London Borough of Hackney to create positive solutions.
To promote increased awareness and develop understanding of environmental issues and the work of environmental organisations.
To influence policy and represent views to the local authority and other organisations and to increase co-operation between such organisations and local environmental groups.
To undertake projects and/or to support and complement the work of others in support of the aim and objects.
To develop the diversity of our organisation.

We are funded only by our members, allowing us to hold our politicians and institutions to account.

Volunteers

We give up our free time and share our skills to support our member organisations and projects.
